Weyehaeuser - Health and Safety

We have 20+ years experience in communications for the forestry and resource sector providing project management, design and writing services as in-house designer for Weyerhaeuser and as contract communication specialists to sector-focused companies and their clients.

As a member of Weyerhaeuser Canada's Health and Safety Exchange Deployment Team, we developed high quality, user friendly, health and safety action plans for the use in Canadian Lumber Business operating units. These plans were derived from a professional and practical interpretation of the Weyerhaeuser Health and Safety Exchange (HS&E) criteria questions. Koch Ink maintained the CLB Safety website as well as the Weyerhaeuser Lumber Business Health and Safety website.

The role of the team:

• To interpret the intent of the HS&E questions for the operating units.
• Where appropriate, develop processes, forms, tools etc. that will enhance and/or advance the unit’s ability to meet the intent of the HS&E criteria questions.
• To develop practical processes, methods and tools, - the role of the operating units was to effectively implement.
• Where appropriate to exceed the requirements of the HSE to provide practical guidelines to meet higher CLB standards.

Basic steps in development of deployment plans:

• Sub-element(s) were selected as per the 5 year plan
• Team members researched best practices (formal call for information), forms, processes etc.
• The merits of each approach were discussed briefly and consensus reached on which was a “best practice”
• The team reviewed and agreed on intent of a question or group of questions
• Agreement reached to use or modify an existing practice or develop one
• Draft deployment plan(s) developed
• Draft plans either: (intent is to confirm user friendliness & practical application)
  • placed on web test site for review by units
  • reviewed by a test unit ( identified by CLBLT or the deployment team)
• Draft plans reviewed by the CLBLT and approved, rejected and/or approved with modifications
• Approved deployment plans posted on the CLB, HS&E web page

Auditing experience:

• Trained auditor for Weyerhaeuser Canada Lumber Business
• Completed 12 week-long audits over a 2 year period for Weyerhaeuser operations in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario
